It is intended as a supplement to the textbook, Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life by Armen L. Aladjian, James M. Collins, and John H. Gillespie (1998). Huisman (1982). 1. The Biological Birth-Rate - Background to the Development of Biology(-280s–300s B.C.) The first attempts at biological studies occurred about 700,000 years ago during the Stone Age. In that era, women from different habitats were forced to live together because of a global warming that occurred about 300,000 years ago. In this period, human groups developed a unique way of living together, which involved food togetherness and childbearing within a clan. This lifestyle varied from one culture to another and was practiced over many millennia by many cultures around the world throughout time . Today the anthropological crossroads between humans and apes is a well known one.2. Biology’s Stages (300s B.C. to 1850) 3. Biochemistry (1933–present) As the molecular nature of life was explored, biochemistry came into existence. It is the study of the chemical processes which take place within living cells and organisms, primarily those concerning energy transfer and metabolism (obtaining nutrients). Biochemistry is one of the most rapidly evolving fields of scientific research today; its scientific methods include use of DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, protein sequencing, mass spectrometry for analysis by gas-phase ionization and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy which is used to determine structure. The techniques of biochemistry are divided into these three types:4. Molecular biology ( 1950s ) Advances in molecular genetics led to the discovery of specific molecular mechanisms in living systems which produce hereditary changes or mutations, leading to the development of genetic engineering. This opened up new fields not only within genetics but also to microbiology, biochemistry and other areas in science by utilizing this knowledge in microorganisms. These advances gave rise to the field of molecular biology, which is now one of the most rapidly developing areas within science . 5. Genetic engineering ( 1960s ) Genetically modified organisms are organisms whose genetic makeup has been altered by engineers using recombinant techniques because it can be done quickly and safely.
